REYN 1- WIP (draft)- Dirtysocks and Reyn Reunion FLASHBACK

Some years ago Reyn's father, Dirtysocks, told his daughter of a legendary horse named Sampson.  An extraordinary steed, known for his tremendous strength and enormous stature. Dirtysocks sighted this tremendous animal some years back when trekking across Canada en route to Newfoundland, returning there to regain seasonal employment couting seals for Admiral Cain on the ice fields of the arctic.

Work was difficult to find in the economic uncertainty of this first decade of the new century, especially for a nearly sempiternal feline. Dirtysocks traveled now in moderate haste at the bequest of a telegram from Cain received two weeks prior which guaranteed him a scouting position provided he arrived in Saint John's before the fleet sailed for the ice. *1- (see 'The Wandering and Tails of Dirtysocks', Piedmont Publishing, 1957, and "Death on the Ice",  Cassie Brown, Doubleday Canada, 1972)

Dirtysocks had witnessed Sampson plowing a field of wheat on his own, led gently by a single man by a light tether. Sampson, (later renamed Goliath) was drawing eight linked six-blade furrow plows, a job normally requiring six or more regular draft horses.

Dirtysocks witnessed this feat while standing alongside twenty or more men who watched in awe from thirty yards distance. Reyne's father saw the gentle beast working a field near Bucksdale, Canada. The horse's name was Sampson, He was sired by Goliath over FO the mare Delia, each parent also being abnormal strength and size. Dirtysocks gazed at this remarkable Shire Horse at work for nearly thirty minutes before continuing his travels back into the States.

Now it was 1910 and Reyn was passing B it was through Canada on his way to Santa Fe New Mexico visit his old friend Bill Hitchcock. Sock's, or DS as some call him was returning from the seal hunt off the coast of Newfoundland.a season on the Newfoundland ice flows.
Buffalo Bill Cody and Dirtysocks, along with some like-minded philanthropists and entrepreneurs stolid volunteers, and investors were all getting together to form a secret pact or organization.
During the first meeting over a year ago ....
Since then....
....As a group, the men could never agree on a suitable name or acronym for the organization, only that it it would require a password and a secret handshake.
Dirtysocks held up his forepaws and screeched in his loudest baritone growl- "No! No Ratting Handshakes or you're Clawed."
People seldom argued with my father. He'd been a scoundrel, a bandit, a pirate, and now a seal clubber, and who knows, but always spy.
"And we'll just be the scheme, because it rhymes with dream, okay?
"And", he added,'"
---------------------------------
aking other like-minded investors were hatching a scheme to corner the buffalo, rawhide, seal, and otter pelt markets. Dirtysocks had returned after totally examining the seal trade. Very soon a very competent man from California would arrive to reveal the Spanish hide. Richard Dana would also bring to light the unknown horrors otter industry.
Unknown at the time, and generally repressed by conservative historians, the objective of this secret organization was to control the market, force prices up, and ultimately reduce demand. If they can't reduce demand, reduce product. How? War, famine, and disease came to mind. Or ultimately turn to entertainment- check with the robber barons. We're getting way beyond the scope of this little chia break.
"Reyn" " Dad scratched out, his voice scratchier than a cold front from the arctic, and now sounding as if a hairball were permanently lodged deep in, "Reyn, dear, that dang horse was as big as one of your British coal cars. Not as big as one of ours mind you...

REYN ONE- A- REYN ONE- FLASHBACK RIVER SACK

XXX- A- REYN ONE- Young Reyn ?     (serial-wip)

>YOUNG REYN

Whatever it is, it's been maintained in that old Frigidaire since I can't remember, at least since my parents married. I've heard that long before that it had been secluded in other inconspicuous places for generations.  It uses no power that we know of, it just does what it does. Reyn wouldn't be with us without it.
=
Few people know that Reyn was first found by my great-grandmother Michelle Anne during a family outing along the Ribble River in 1892. It was a typical dreary wet sod of a day, but the family was making the British best of it.  Young Mich, as they called Mich Anne, was dallying about the sand and reed bank poking at things with a stout stick.
=
When she saw and poked at a saggy-soaked sack half floating in and out of the water she heard a very fragile 'mew'.  There was unmistakably a kitten in that saggy sack. She called for her brother, who was just a short bit up the bank, and he rushed over to her. Together they dragged the water-logged saggy sack up the bank. It tore open as they did exposing river stones, and five kittens, one just twitching with life.
=
The Children desperately screamed for their parents who arrived as swiftly as parents can.  The surviving kitten was as sick as believable, and beyond frail.  She remained near-dead weak. Mich's Constable father promoted only the most horrible suggestion but withdrew it immediately as he believed my Great Grandmother Michelle Anne might nurse this kitten back to some meager semblance of health.  If not, it might serve as a fine lesson for his middle daughter.
=
Mich was an unbelievable and loving vet. She cared for Reyn as she would later care for gassed soldiers and others in the wars. Reyn forever seemed to grow stronger and healthier. Remarkable in many ways.  She became the fiery feline author and housekeeper that purrs wildly today.  Michelle Anne later worked with Theodore Roosevelt and John Muir promoting the National Parks Service.  And of course, Reyn was there, often with her occasional companion Dirty Socks.
